In this blog post I will discuss my experience with an activity I play tested written by Monique. I chose this activity for a few reasons. As a student I struggled with comprehensive reading strategies such as identifying the main idea. I believe this was due to a lack of exposure of reading passages. Couple this with irrelevant and uninteresting passages/readings that don't capture a student's focus and result was my struggle to perform well that these abstract tasks. IXL uses an interactive and predictive model that provides relevant current events to students while tracking their progress question to question.
IXL can clearly explain SmartScore better than I can so please read the above picture.
I think that this is a benefit to all students, whether they are strong, moderate or weak. Since IXL makes the difficulty of the question based on the strength of the student, no one will be asked to answer a question more difficult than they are capable of handling. A question I had answered while working on this activity was "How will a student learn from their mistakes if a teacher is not present to help them?". Fortunately, IXL has that covered.
IXL will remind the student of what a main idea is, and then provide them an explanation for why they answered the question wrong. This level of feedback is important for students who may not have a teacher near them to ask for help.
I enjoyed reading the short passages and answering the questions. My goal was to get to a SmartScore of 100 in the fewest amount of questions until I hit a brief roadblock.
After clicking to become a member, I ran into this..
Luckily, once I signed into my school account I was able to continue and receive the 100 smart score. It then suggested me to move on to the next topic. There was a plethora of material if I decided to continue and all of this could absolutely be utilized by teachers for all age groups. Thank you to Monique for sharing this activity and resource!
